This is a mockup idea BASED off "Avant Window Navigator" which I started in Photoshop.. (not finished). Also, icons & wallpaper are made by others, not me..

Purpose:
It's purpose would be to replace both panels on Ubuntu Linux, Keep things Simple/Easy, and Save Space; while keeping ourselves moving in a forward future direction..

How it works:
On the left of the Dock you would have the System Icon, when u click the System icon you get a bubble with your ' programs and preferences' in them like shown in the attachment.. When you click something in the Bubble, like "Internet" the contents in the bubble would change to show all of your internet applications with which you could launch from that bubble..

When you type in the search of the bubble, the contents in the bubble would change to what it found in the search til' you hit the clear search button, in which you would be taken back to the main " Programs & Pref's" menu.

When you open/run a program - that programs icon is then displayed in the middle of the dock.. anything open, minimized, or in the tray would show up on the middle of the dock to indicate to you that it is a running application..

The right of the Dock would be for things like a trashcan, date/time, and weather..

The dock can be set to auto-hide to save even more space when working.. when one clicks an app icon of something already running on the dock you would be switched to that application on whatever workarea that application is located on..

When you get an email or update available, a small text or window like the bubble with text in it would popup somewhere on the screen stating you got something new and some info about it quickly, then it would auto minimize to the dock.

Also there may be a Icon next to the 'System Icon' on the dock for ' places' with a bubble filled with place like 'home' & 'file system' and so on; which when u click those a Nautilus window would open to that folder. Maybe u can choose to have a nautilus folder open or for it to open the folders contents in the bubble..

The way it's layed out and runs makes it a bit dif from AWN but it's Very Very close to the same thing..
This is just steps further and would make Ubuntu a lot Simpler, easier, and kool..
It would set a big standard for other OS's to copy or work around.

lush dock

lovin it i think it would look good with my blue and black awn theme that i have made (visit my gallery to see it)

anyway it think it could be done if you made some changes to the existing awn menu and put in the search and stuff

also there must be a way to remove boath panles in the gnome desktop enviroment, i will look on the ubuntu forums to see if there is a way to do it, i will send u a link if i find one,

also i am willing to help you build this awn menu if you want, at the moment i am building a website for a small pc case modding company, so work will be a little slugish at firsh i am afriad,

but if you are interested in helping me work on this plz contact me.

That sounds really cool. School will have me a bit tied down though, I have some speeches and a portfolio I have to work on this next month.

same here mate i have got school but i have nearly finished building this website, w00p w00p!!!, so i will try and devote the rest of my free time to working on this awn menu, if you would be so kind as to send me the mockup for the awn menu plus the icons and stuff that you used, i would find that very helpful, also i am thinking of using the existing awn menu as a base point to work from (changing the gui and the menu links to your description and adding in the search and stuff).

Sorry for the late reply.

A while back I lost all of my PSD images, so I don't have the mockup anymore.. Also, you can download most of the icons from here and here.

Fantastic idea, though I think if someone were to go ahead with it, the dock itself would need some changes to give it some individuality. One of the things that really bothered me about AWN (and most other Linux docks) is that it's very similar to Mac's dock. Leaders, not followers!

The problem with making something completely new ("leaders, not followers") is that it hardly ever happens in todays world. Almost everything that we have today or come up with tomorrow all comes from ideas long before ours, just with our own spin. There is nothing wrong with that.

Little changes to the skin of the dock is something almost anyone could do, but that also doesn't make it any more different from the Mac Dock, other than look, because it's still a dock.

If anything, the way this dock functions is what really makes it different from Apples Dock.

Thank you for the look and great comment. ;)
I wish I could have made this happen, but I sort of don't mind anymore. I just use "Gnome-Do" now. :P The new version rocks!
